An elderly woman showed up at Deep Run Roadhouse in Henrico, Virginia around noon on a Sunday, part of a local senior transportation group's outing. The barbecue restaurant's new location wasn't open for business yet. She told the staff she supposed she'd just have to walk home. Executive chef Andrew Griffin wasn't going to let that happen.
A Ride Turned Into Something More
Griffin offered Miss Duke a ride home. But as they got into the van together, he found himself thinking about his own grandmother — what her life might have looked like as she got older, what she might have needed from the people around her. That thought pushed him to do more than just drop her off.
A Surprise Recognition
Word of what Griffin had done reached local news, and 12 On Your Side surprised him with its Acts of Kindness Award, along with $300 in cash and a restaurant gift card. Deep Run Roadhouse owner Paul Hubbard didn't hold back his pride: "I couldn't be more proud of you. What you did for Miss Duke is just a small piece of what you do for all these guys on a daily basis. It really tells us what kind of character you have and how much you care about your people."
Not a One-Time Thing
Hubbard's comment points to something bigger than a single Sunday afternoon — the recognition wasn't for an isolated gesture, but for a pattern of how Griffin treats the people around him. For Miss Duke, it meant not having to walk home. For Griffin, it started with a thought about his grandmother and ended with a reminder of why the small decisions matter.
