An Israeli air strike hit a tent sheltering displaced Palestinians early Monday near al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir al-Balah, central Gaza, killing at least one person and wounding several others, according to local health officials and Al Jazeera's reporting from the scene.
What each side says
The Israeli military said it had targeted two "militants" in the Deir al-Balah area on Sunday night. It identified one of them as Muhammad Abdul Nasser Jaber Abu Asad, whom it described as a member of Hamas's military wing who took part in the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, and said the pair had been "working to rebuild Hamas's capabilities" in what it called a violation of the ceasefire. Al Jazeera identified a man killed in the strike as Mohammed Abu Assad. IF Daily has not independently verified the Israeli military's characterization of the target, and there is no public evidence offered so far beyond the military's own statement.
The broader toll
Gaza's Health Ministry says at least 1,288 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli strikes since the October 2025 ceasefire took effect, part of an overall war death toll it puts at more than 73,000 since October 2023. Those figures come from the Hamas-run ministry and have not been independently verified by IF Daily, though the United Nations and independent researchers have generally found the ministry's overall casualty figures broadly credible in past assessments of the war.
The strike comes despite a U.S.-brokered ceasefire meant to end the war, and amid ongoing diplomatic efforts, including a recent visit by U.S. officials, aimed at disarming Hamas and securing an Israeli troop withdrawal from Gaza. Monday's incident is the latest in a series of strikes that has raised doubts about how durable the truce actually is on the ground.
