A routine overnight response to a reported domestic disturbance in Olney, Illinois, ended with a 49-year-old man dead after a Richland County sheriff’s deputy deployed a Taser during the encounter.
The incident happened at approximately 3:35 a.m. on June 8 at a residence in the 4500 block of East Golf Lane, according to the Illinois State Police.
When deputies arrived, they located Kenneth Lee Grove at the residence.
Illinois State Police said Grove failed to comply with the deputy’s commands. The deputy then deployed a Taser, striking Grove.
Grove subsequently became unresponsive.
Emergency medical services were requested, and the deputy began life-saving measures at the scene. Despite those efforts, Grove was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The Richland County Sheriff’s Office requested that Illinois State Police investigate the circumstances surrounding Grove’s death.
The investigation
The Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation, Zone 8, took over the death investigation.
At the time of the state police announcement, authorities said the investigation was active and that no additional information was available.
The case is expected to be turned over to the Richland County State’s Attorney for review once the investigation is completed.
That distinction matters: authorities have confirmed the sequence of events, but the available official information does not establish that the Taser caused Grove’s death.
A local report published June 18 said the Illinois State Police investigation was still ongoing and that no additional information had been released.
What the video shows
The body-camera footage circulating online appears to show an officer responding to the incident at night. The footage has been shared by the Instagram account @police_incidents.
The circulating video should be treated as visual documentation of the encounter, not as a substitute for the official investigation.
At this point, the publicly available information does not provide a detailed account of everything that happened immediately before the Taser was deployed, nor does it provide a medical finding explaining Grove’s death.
The Illinois State Police investigation is therefore central to determining what happened during the encounter and what factors contributed to Grove’s death.
As of the latest available reporting, no final investigative conclusion had been publicly released.
