Molly Selin had her headphones on, riding a train home after a work trip to Spain, when the 81-year-old woman sitting diagonally across from her leaned in and asked if she'd just come back from traveling. Forty minutes later, Selin had a new friend — and, eventually, a promise to keep.

A Conversation That Kept Going

The woman's name was Maria Alvarez. Over the course of that train ride, Selin, 27, learned that Alvarez had lost her husband at 28, her parents a few months after that, and her daughter at 56. She also learned that Alvarez hadn't been back to Puerto Rico, the island she was born on, in more than fifty years — because she was too afraid to fly.

The two didn't just exchange numbers and drift apart. Selin started visiting Alvarez's apartment every Monday for dinner, documenting the visits in a TikTok series she called "Mondays With Maria."

This sounds crazy since we don't really know each other, but if you ever want to go somewhere, I'd be happy to fly with you.

The Internet Stepped In

When Selin shared the story of Alvarez's fear of flying — and her decades-long wish to see Puerto Rico again — the series found an audience well beyond the people who'd been following along on Mondays. Delta, Hilton, and Discover Puerto Rico all reached out, offering to make the trip happen.

Salsa Lessons and a Aunt She Hadn't Seen in Decades

Alvarez and Selin flew to Puerto Rico together. They took salsa lessons, went on chocolate-tasting tours, and — in a detail that outdid even the trip itself — tracked down Alvarez's aunt and cousin, family she hadn't seen since she left the island more than fifty years earlier.

It's like my other child.

Alvarez has said simply that Selin "changed my life." Selin, for her part, has said she'll keep showing up on Mondays whether or not either of them ever explains why a conversation on a train turned into this.
