Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" has become the highest-grossing R-rated film in box office history, passing "Deadpool & Wolverine" with a global total of $1.352 billion as of August 20.
The numbers
"The Odyssey," starring Matt Damon, Tom Holland and Anne Hathaway, opened to roughly $124 million domestically over its July 17-19 debut weekend and crossed the $1 billion global mark by August 7. Its $1.352 billion total now edges out "Deadpool & Wolverine's" $1.338 billion final haul, making it just the third R-rated film ever to cross $1 billion worldwide, joining "Deadpool & Wolverine" and "Joker." It's also Nolan's first film to top $1 billion globally since 2012's "The Dark Knight Rises," surpassing both that film ($1.085 billion) and 2023's "Oppenheimer" ($975 million) to become his highest-grossing release ever.
A gracious response from the old record-holder
Ryan Reynolds marked the moment with a 36-second video mixing clips from both films, playing on the fact that Deadpool & Wolverine's climactic fight takes place inside a Honda Odyssey minivan. "Congratulations to the entire cast and crew of The Odyssey for becoming the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time," Reynolds wrote. "That is one helluva car."
"The Odyssey" continues to run in more than 3,200 North American theaters, currently holding the No. 2 domestic spot behind "Spider-Man: Brand New Day."
