Wyndham Clark won the BMW Championship at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis on Sunday, closing with birdies on the 16th, 17th and 18th holes to finish at 17-under 263, three shots clear of Patrick Cantlay.
A lead lost, then reclaimed
Clark had built a five-shot lead earlier in the final round before Rory McIlroy mounted a charge, briefly drawing level after 16 holes. Clark answered immediately, birdieing the final three holes to pull away for good and finish four shots ahead of McIlroy, who ended up third at 13-under. Gary Woodland also pushed into contention, getting within two shots at one point before fading, and finished tied for fourth with Collin Morikawa at 12-under.
What it means
The victory was worth $3.6 million from the tournament's $20 million purse and locks in Clark's place at the season-ending Tour Championship at East Lake, part of the 30-player field that advanced out of the FedEx Cup Playoffs' second event. Rickie Fowler and Bud Cauley were among the players who fell short of qualifying for East Lake.
It's the reigning U.S. Open champion's third win of the year, capping what has already been one of the strongest seasons of his career.
