A seat-swap request on a Delta Air Lines flight turned into a confrontation that ended with a passenger being removed from the aircraft — and the dispute has now taken another turn after the airline responded to his complaint.

The passenger, Santiago Daza, was traveling on Delta flight 983 from Bogotá to Atlanta on September 9 when, according to his account, a member of the crew asked him to change seats so a woman could sit beside her husband.

Daza initially agreed. But after seeing the replacement seat, he said he changed his mind because it was smaller and less comfortable than the seat he had originally paid for.

The situation escalated after Daza returned to his assigned seat.

According to Daza, another crew member approached him and asked for his information. He then began recording the interaction with Meta smart glasses because he felt the situation was escalating.

The confrontation continued until Daza was told that the captain had decided he would not remain on the flight.

Daza later shared footage of the encounter online, and the video drew millions of views, turning a dispute over an airplane seat into a much bigger debate about passenger rights, seat changes and how airlines handle conflicts onboard.

But the story did not end when Daza left the aircraft.

Delta's response

After Daza filed a complaint, he said Delta reviewed the incident and offered him a $150 electronic travel credit.

Daza rejected the offer.

What surprised him even more, according to his latest account, was that Delta told him it could not find a report from the captain or crew documenting the circumstances surrounding his removal from the flight.

Daza said that left him with more questions about why he had been removed from the aircraft in the first place.

Delta has given a different explanation for the removal.

The airline said the issue involved Daza's failure to follow instructions from the crew and emphasized that the safety of passengers and crew members comes first. However, reports about the case say Delta has not publicly identified the specific instruction that led to the decision to remove him.

That distinction is important because Daza's account focuses on the original request to change seats and his decision to record the confrontation, while Delta's explanation centers on compliance with crew instructions.

Daza has said he will continue pursuing his complaint rather than accepting the $150 offer.

The incident has meanwhile sparked a wider argument online: if an airline asks a passenger to give up a seat he paid for so a couple can sit together, should the passenger be expected to accept a less comfortable replacement?

And if the passenger refuses, where should the line be drawn between a routine seat dispute and a situation serious enough to remove someone from a flight?

For now, the competing accounts remain at the center of the controversy.

Daza says he wants a clear explanation for why he was removed. Delta says passengers must follow crew instructions.

The debate is still very much alive.
