A fellow passenger later told media she could see Thornton's laptop screen and saw messages and images in a chatroom that appeared to reference children. The flight crew alerted authorities, and law enforcement met the plane at the gate.

This is the part that matters most, and it's not the part that spreads fastest: according to Thornton's attorney, officers spoke with him for five minutes or less, determined immediately that no wrongdoing had occurred, and told him he was free to go. He was never arrested. He has not been charged with any crime. His lawyer stated plainly that Thornton "did not engage in any illegal conduct."

A cleared police encounter and a network suspension aren't contradictions — they're two different systems moving at two different speeds. Sony's internal review isn't bound by what police concluded in five minutes on a jet bridge; it's a separate process, on its own timeline, weighing its own standard for who gets to stay on a show watched in millions of living rooms. Thornton has already been written out of already-filmed Season 44 episodes while that review continues.
