A two-year-old golden retriever named Lexa survived three days trapped beneath the wreckage of her family's home in General Trias, Cavite, in the Philippines, after a landslide tore through the property during heavy rain.
What happened
The family's house stood near a river, and on August 7, after days of heavy rain, soil behind the property gave way, sending mud, broken concrete and other debris crashing through the home. The family evacuated the area, but in the chaos, Lexa could not be found.
A bark from beneath the rubble
Three days later, the family heard barking coming from somewhere beneath the wreckage; Lexa was still alive. Volunteers and local authorities joined the search, using jackhammers and other tools to carefully clear away rock and rubble without harming the trapped dog. After hours of work, a small opening finally appeared, and Lexa crawled out to be reunited with her family.
Video of the rescue, showing Lexa muddy but alert and wagging her tail as she emerged, has circulated widely online since. This incident is separate from the deadlier landslide reported around the same period in Baguio, roughly 170 miles away.
