A decade-old year is having a moment online. Social media users are digging up photos from 2016 and posting them under the #2016 hashtag, which has now racked up more than 1 million posts on TikTok and over 37 million on Instagram — a nostalgia wave big enough that celebrities are joining in alongside everyone else.
Even the Famous Are Doing It
John Legend and Reese Witherspoon are both among the celebrities who've posted their own decade-old photos, treating the trend the same way anyone scrolling through old camera rolls would: pick a picture from 2016, post it, let the caption do the rest.
Why 2016, Specifically
Fashion journalist and former Vogue editor Leah Faye Cooper says the appeal isn't random. "People are really longing for a time that felt simpler, a time that felt really optimistic," she said. Cooper points to two things that made 2016 feel different in hindsight: it came before the coronavirus pandemic, and before social media algorithms fully took over how people experience the internet.
She also ties it to a broader nostalgia cycle already running through culture — fashion reboots, TV remakes, and a general appetite for revisiting the recent past. The #2016 trend isn't inventing that appetite; it's just the latest, easiest way to act on it: no outfit to buy, no show to stream, just an old photo and a caption.
