Gunmen opened fire on patrons at a shisanyama -- an informal barbecue and entertainment venue -- in Lwandle, a township near Strand in South Africa's Western Cape, at approximately 1:46 a.m. on Sunday, September 27, 2026.
What police have confirmed
Ten people were killed: five died at the scene, and five more died after being taken to medical facilities. Eleven others were injured and are receiving medical treatment, according to SABC News.
Western Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Sizakhele Dyantyi said gunmen "entered an entertainment place...and shot at patrons." Police have opened murder and attempted-murder cases at Lwandle station.
The investigation
A multidisciplinary team led by Serious and Violent Crime detectives has been assigned to the case, and the South African Police Service has increased deployments in the area. As of Sunday morning, no arrests had been made, and no motive had been officially established. Victim identities are being withheld until next of kin have been notified.
