"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" is now the highest-grossing movie in North American box office history. The Sony and Marvel film crossed $936.8 million domestically this week, edging past the $936.6 million that "Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens" made in 2015 — a record that had stood for more than a decade.
The Fastest Climb to Every Milestone
The film hit the top spot just 47 days after its July 31 release, and it didn't get there slowly. "Brand New Day" was the fastest movie ever to reach $700 million (13 days), $800 million (19 days), and $900 million (36 days) domestically. Its opening weekend alone — $360 million — beat "Avengers: Endgame" for the biggest domestic opening of all time.
Still Climbing Worldwide
Globally, the film has now made $2.45 billion, putting it third all-time behind only "Avatar" ($2.9 billion) and "Avengers: Endgame" ($2.7 billion). With the film still in theaters, analysts are watching whether it becomes the first movie ever to cross $1 billion domestically.
A Record Built on a Franchise That Wouldn't Quit
The film's run breaks a record that outlasted every Marvel and Star Wars release of the last ten years — including entries from both of those franchises that were widely expected to be the ones to finally top it. Instead, it's a Spider-Man movie, 24 years after the character's first modern film adaptation, that got there.
